Students from two classes have teamed up with Sydney-based environmental artist Leesa Knights, who is holding a solo show called Salvaged at the art gallery from October 26 to December 3.
The show is part of the annual Sculpture in the Vineyards event, which will be held across three vineyards in Wollombi at the same time.
The students will create assemblage artworks for the exhibition with small wooden objects they have brought in from home.
The idea is to encourage the students and the school community to reduce, recycle and re-use.
The students were encouraged to bring in objects that had some meaning to them. For example, one student brought in a fence paling that they had kept from their old house. Another student asked her pop to carve her a heart out of wood for the project.
Ms Knights visited the school earlier this month to see the students items and hear the stories behind them.
The objects will be decorated and the collection will also include the children's stories about their connection to the pieces they brought in.
At the end of the exhibition, Ms Knights will dismantle and donate the pieces back to the school so the children can have their artwork hanging on display.
Kes Harper, who is curating this year’s Sculpture in the Vineyards, was at the school for Ms Knights’ visit. She said the kids were all very excited to be a part of the project.
