Kimberley Ellis, who runs Zumba with Kim in Cessnock, came across Warrior Blankets on Instagram.
The organisation was founded by Sydney woman Jessica Bowie, 18, who herself has multiple chronic illnesses, including Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.
She founded Warrior Blankets in March 2016 and has since made and delivered more than 300 blankets for babies, young children, teens and young adults with chronic illnesses all over Australia – free of charge.
After seeing the photos of the beautiful blankets and reading more about it, Ms Ellis said she wanted to do something to help.
Zumba with Kim was approaching its first birthday, so Ms Ellis decided to combine the celebration with a fundraiser for Warrior Blankets.
Seventeen instructors from all over the Hunter region and Central Coast, and as far as Sydney and Port Macquarie, will attend the fun night.
The Shining Stars Crew from Endeavour Kurri, who take Zumba classes with Ms Ellis, will make their Zumba stage debut on the night.
Ms Ellis said she has been “totally blown away” by the kindness of everyone who has supported the event so far, including the instructors and the local businesses that have donated raffle prizes.
The money raised will go towards materials and postage costs, and her goal is to raise enough to send out an entire year’s worth of blankets.
Ms Bowie said the support for Warrior Blankets was heart-warming.
“I’m beyond grateful for everything they’re doing to help send more out even more Warrior Blankets to young people facing life changing illnesses,” she said.
The fun night will be held at the Cessnock Masonic Hall in Cumberland Street on Saturday, February 10 from 5.30pm to 7pm.
The theme is ‘colours of the rainbow’, and participants are encouraged to dress in their favourite colour.
Entry is $10 at the door and all are welcome. Find out more at Zumba with Kim on Facebook.
