Sewer upgrades have started in the CBD as part of the city’s light rail project, Revitalising Newcastle program director Michael Cassel says.

A sewer boring machine went underground in the Civic precinct at the weekend as part of upgrades that will take place along the route.
As part of the work, pumps will be run into large pits to take out water before reinforcing sheet piles, shoring boxes and new sewer pipes are installed.
“That’s obviously the riskiest part of the work – whenever you’re in the ground it’s a little bit harder to predict exactly what’s going to happen,” Mr Cassel said.

“But at the end of the day we’re moving ahead in line with our expectations and we remain on budget. Once you’re out of the ground, work progresses a lot quicker. I’d expect in the next three to four months there’d be a lot more above ground activity.”
Sections of light rail track can now be seen in parts of the city, including on the old heavy rail corridor near Steel Street and at Civic.
