Pokolbin Reds lose 19-26 to Singleton Army in rugby union opener

The Pokolbin Reds opened their 2018 season with a 19-26 loss to Singleton Army in the final minute of the game at St Philips.

Army opened the scoring with a converted try, but the Reds struck back after some strong forward play resulted in a try to Geoff Allen which was converted by Shane Doyle.

Army rallied and through strong forward momentum and quick passes out to the backs they ran over the line and scored the try to lead 14-7 at half-time..

Army camped in the Reds half to start the second half, but the Red defence held strong and managed to score first when Lachie Peacock crossed the line after a scrum from a knock-on. Shane Doyle converted the try to level the scores.

Army responded with an unconverted try.

The Reds held strong and managed to turn the ball over and with a strong run from the backline and great backing up from Alex Thrift the Reds crossed for an unconverted try and the score was 19 all.

There was only a few minutes to go in the half but the game seemed to run on for another 10 minutes and Army managed to muster a penalty scrum five metres out from the try line and with a good individual effort from their number 8 they crossed for a try. Full time with the conversion to be kicked.

A big effort by the Reds and a game that could have gone either way.

Player points went to Alex Thrift 3, Daniel Burns 2 and Shane Doyle 1.

Final Score 19-26.
