The event was initiated in 2011 when members of the RSL approached Fr Wayne Sheean, then priest-in-charge and chaplain to the sub-branch, seeking a service in the local area.
The service continued under Fr Keith Joseph, himself a former Defence Force member, and has been coordinated in recent years by Fr Carl Lanham as chaplain to the RSL sub-branch.
“The parish has a strong relationship with the returned service community, both through this event and through participation in community Anzac Day services,” Fr Lanham said.
“This commemorative service has become part of the community’s remembrance on the occasion of Anzac Day, and enjoys strong support within and beyond the parish.”
As part of the service, the Australian flag and RSL flag are ceremonially presented and laid upon the altar. The colour party this year is to be provided by Number 2 Expeditionary Health Squadron, from RAAF Base Williamtown, and is to be commanded by Flight Lieutenant Mitchell.
Veterans, families of veterans and community members are all warmly welcomed to attend this service, which will start at 6pm Sunday, April 22.
Light refreshments will be served in the church hall following the service.
