And long may it be so.
Toddlers in team colours, actually everyone in team colours – this is a derby like no others.
The rivalry on field is intense, battle scars are earned and worn with pride and then recounted with gusto for generations to come as old teammates and rivals come together for another round of celebrating this unique community event.
Tradition, community, family and friends are at the centre of Coalfields footy and the action and loved ones from under-6s to first grade are cheered on from the sidelines.
Young mates, boys and girls rush around kicking footballs, chasing each other and dreaming of being part of the action on the main stage in years to come.
It’s a great day of footy which is more than 100 year in the making, but an even greater day for two communities to celebrate difference and a shared history.
Bring on round 10 on July 7 when the Bulldogs host the Goannas at The Graveyard.
