Take a look back at what made news in Cessnock 10 years ago this month.
The Advertiser reported on the progress of an aircraft museum that was under construction at Cessnock Airport; a group of Mount View High School students and staff who attended Anzac Day services in Vietnam; and the last-ever Keans coach service to Sydney (which departed Cessnock on the morning of May 23, 2008).
It was a month of milestones, with Coalfields Healthy Heartbeat and NRMA Kurri Kurri celebrating their 21st anniversaries.
In sporting news, Kurri Kurri rider Chad Reed won his second world supercross title, and Kurri Kurri Junior Motorcycle Club added another name to its long list of state champions when 11-year-old Josh Pickering won a NSW junior dirt track title.
Cessnock jockey Robert Thompson was closing in on the late Jack Thompson’s record of 3322 wins, with a victory in the Group 1 Australian Oaks at Randwick that month.
