The festival runs throughout May and June, and began as an attempt to draw more visitors to the region during what was traditionally a quieter season in the valley.

It’s also an excellent opportunity for locals to taste what’s in store in their own backyard, with gourmet dinners, vineyard tours, winemaking masterclasses and hands-on cooking classes among the events that feature on the festival program.

“The Hunter Valley is our locals’ playground and is home to more than 150 wineries and is bursting with all the delights of its highly acclaimed food and wine culture,” Hunter Valley Wine and Tourism Association general manager Jo Thomas said.

“With accommodation and experience packages for every budget, the Hunter Valley Wine and Food Festival is the perfect opportunity for a sumptuous winter getaway or day trip.”

This weekend’s events include the Picnic in the Park at Kirkton Park Hunter Valley on Saturday, and the Original 100-Metre Meal at Margan Winery and Restaurant on Sunday.

A highlight of the festival – the Hunter Culinary Association Food Fight – will take place at Crowne Plaza on Monday, June 18.

The Wollombi Valley is featured on the festival calendar the following weekend, with the Wollombi Winemakers’ Winter Dinner at Stonehurst Cedar Creek on Saturday, June 23.

The festival’s final day – June 30 – is set to be a big one, with signature events including the Hunter Valley Wine Festival at Crowne Plaza; and the Burning of the Barrel at Glandore Estate.

The Hunter Valley Wine Festival is now in its sixth year at Crowne Plaza, with an extensive range of wine, food, beer and cider on offer, along with live entertainment and family-friendly activities.
