The camels, Mikey and Clancy, reside at Muswellbrook’s Camel Milk NSW.
The Hunter’s first camel milk dairy was established in 2014, and is now home to 40 camels that have been saved from slaughter.
The dairy produces award-winning milk and cheese, along with skincare products, and has branched out into camel rides as a way to utilise its male camels (which are also sent to organic farms to help with weed control).
“None of our camels go to the abattoir – we definitely don’t want that,” owner Michelle Phillips said.
Ms Phillips said the camel rides are not only a lot of fun, but a way to educate people about camels and their interesting history – such as their role in the construction of Australia’s railways and highways.
Rides cost $10 per person and will start at 10am this Thursday and Saturday at De Bortoli Wines on Wine Country Drive.
