The Princess Bride follows the college’s wildly-entertaining productions of Stir Worz (2015) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2017).
It’s a tale as old as time – a fairy tale adventure about a beautiful young woman and her one true love.
The Princess Bride tells the story of Buttercup, a beautiful woman who lives on a farm in the mythical kingdom of Florin with her parents, her horse and their farm-boy Westley – whom she falls in love with.
But when Westley leaves to seek his fortune and Buttercup hears the news that he is dead, she agrees, reluctantly, to marry Prince Humperdinck, the heir to the throne of Florin.
When Buttercup is kidnapped by three outlaws, all sorts of wild adventures ensue as the two lovers try to reunite.
The 1987 film (starring Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin and Billy Crystal) was based on the William Goldman novel of the same name.
The St Philip’s version has been adapted from the book and film, paying homage to the classic story, but with a few surprises – including songs from Queen, Michael Jackson, Pink and Ed Sheeran, mind-blowing sets and glow-in-the-dark puppetry.
“We have added some scenes, embellished some characters and added some new characters to modernise it – but it still has all of the original, great things to enjoy about The Princess Bride,” the college’s secondary drama teacher Andrew Hall said.
About 60 students from years 8 to 12 are involved in the cast and crew, and have been rehearsing since the beginning of the year.
The students say it has been a fantastic experience to be part of the production, with confidence, team work and making new friends among the benefits.
Shows will take place at 7pm on Friday, August 17 and Saturday, August 18.
