Mr Barr held a reception, at Cessnock Regional Art Gallery last week, to thank five volunteers who have dedicated countless hours to giving back to the community.
Four of the recipients – Ellena Morris, Kieth Hearnden Joanne Smith, and Deborah Mellross – were recognised through the Premier’’s Volunteer Recognition Program while a fifth, Terry O’Brien, was honoured for over 50 years of service as a Justice of the Peace.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our community and we rely so heavily on them,” Mr Barr said.
“Without volunteers, there is no doubt our community would not be able to function as successfully as it does.
“In no way do any of these volunteers seek public recognition, but given their achievements, I think each of them deserve to be applauded by the community."
Ellena Morris was honoured for for her work as a Special Olympics volunteer who also runs a variety of swim programs for people with an intellectual disability.
Joanne Smith was applauded fo her work with the Heal for Life Foundation, while Kieth Hearnden was recognised for his work with the PCYC and Cessnock Police program Project Rebuild that assisted at-risk youth rebuild and refurbish a Holden ute.
Deborah Mellross’ efforts as a volunteer for Cessnock PCYC in the administration department were also acknowledged at the reception.
