Now it is the group itself that needs the community’s help after they discovered that they will have to vacate their premises in March next year.
The group currently meets at the Seventh Day Adventist Cottage on Maitland Street in Kurri, and engages in a raft of worthwhile projects such as crocheting blankets for the homeless and fidget blankets for dementia patients, however, with the church planning things for the site, the group have to make alternative arrangements.
Shed president Dee Threlfo said that while the group were grateful for the use of the site over the past few years, they had started to outgrow the space.
“The situation is that we were already looking because they put a wall up which closed us in a little and on a good day it can get a bit squashy, especially if you get someone in with a walker or a wheelchair,” she said.
“Then we got an official letter a couple of weeks ago to say that we had to move out because they want to put someone in there more permanently.”
Ms Threlfo added that the group needed to find new digs before March next year and have already had offers from the community.
“We really need something that is a decent size with a tidy kitchen and storage facilities,” she said.
“We have been looking at some places, but the problem is that you might find a decent size floor space but not adequate kitchen facilities or storage.
“We had a place offered to us on the main street – it would have been perfect, only the toilet wasn’t accessible and the area wasn’t quite big enough.”
Ms Threlfo said that, given the grassroots nature of the group, they weren’t in a position to be spending money on huge rents.
“We are hoping that there might be some organisation, building owner, church group or school that has a place which would be suitable for us,” she said.
