The first two rounds of the Twenty20 competition are being held today with double headers from 10am at East End Oval, Carmichael and Baddeley.
Cessnock District Cricket Association president Stephen Hedger said the Australia Day grand final would be showcase event replacing the annual Mayor’s Cup between the Cessnock representative team and a team selected by the Cessnock mayor.
“The Mayor’s Cup introduced Twenty20 cricket to Cessnock and it was a very popular event,” Hedger said.
“It created interested in the game and led to the East Cessnock Bowling Club coming on board and sponsoring the two-tier competition involving all the association teams we have now.”
