The conference program had a number of workshops, presentations and discussion sessions covering a variety of topics, from business management to climate change.
Many of these farmers do not often get a chance to be away from the farm and this conference enabled them to come together as an industry to discuss shared challenges.
Local Government Week 2019
Local Government Week 2019 was a great success and council were proud to put on a number of events for the community to enjoy.
Two groups were taken on a behind the scenes tour of the Cessnock Waste Management Centre. The tour allowed residents to better understand how waste is managed and the operation of the facility.
Last Wednesday was a highlight, as over 200 students attended the School Leaders Breakfast at the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre. Students heard from young, Australian war veteran and survivor Damien Thomlinson. He shared his personal story and talked about hard work, perseverance and setting goals.
No doubt students walked away feeling inspired and driven to succeed no matter what life has in store.
Our libraries, Governance team and Finance team were also involved in putting on events for the community during the week. Well done to all the staff that got involved, it was a unique opportunity to connect with residents.
Regional Tourism Awards
The Regional Tourism Awards were held in Newcastle last week. Congratulations to Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley who took out two categories, the Business Event Venues and Deluxe Accommodation.
Beyond Ballooning also picked up two awards, winning the Tour Operator and Adventure Tourism sections. Well done, an excellent result! A great result also for Hunter Valley Gardens who was successful in being named the recipient of the Major Festival and Events Section.
Local Government NSW Awards
Cessnock City Council attended the Local Government NSW Awards held in Sydney last week. Council and the Community was recognised for a number of program areas and received a Highly Commended, RH Dougherty Award for 'Together we deliver, City of Cessnock, NAIDOC Week 2018' in the category of 'Innovation and Special Events'.
We also received a Joint Highly Commended award in LGNSW Planning Awards for 'Branxton Town Centre' in the category of 'Culture Change Innovation and Excellence'. Cessnock City Council was also a finalist in the Leo Kelly OAM Arts and Culture Awards for Seniors Festival 2018.
A great result for both events and a reflection of the hard work of our community and staff in bringing these programs to life.
