Momentum is building for the 2019 Cessnock Relay For Life, which is less than two months away.
The annual Cancer Council fundraiser, which is in its twelfth year in Cessnock, will be held at Baddeley Park on Saturday, October 12.
The committee received a confidence boost at Cancer Council NSW's annual Relay For Life Summit in July, when Cessnock was announced as the winner of the award for highest funds raised per participant in 2018.
With about 350 people registered, the 2018 Cessnock relay raised $77,000 (approximately $220 per participant).
Cancer Council community relations coordinator Clint Ekert said the state award was highly sought-after, and one that the community should be proud of.
"It is such a high accolade to win this award for a small community like ours," Mr Ekert said.
"It just goes to show the kind of people we have in our community and why I am proud of our area."
Relay for Life helps to fund local support services like the transport-to-treatment vehicle, which provides free transport to and from hospital for cancer patients from Cessnock.
Last year more than 650 trips were provided free of charge, thanks to fundraising conducted at Relay for Life.
Other initiatives funded by Relay For Life include research, advocacy, education and cancer prevention programs.
Cessnock Relay For Life has this year partnered with the Cessnock Goannas for a major raffle.
Tickets are $100 each, with a $10,000 prize up for grabs.
Tickets are on sale at Balloon Worx in Vincent Street, with syndicates available for friends, family and colleagues.
The raffle will be drawn on Friday, September 27.
"We are so appreciative of the support the Goannas have shown us, not only providing the best venue in the state, but to help with our fund raising as well," Mr Ekert said.
The Relay committee will also be hosting a free family movie night at the Cessnock Leagues Club park on Saturday, August 31. Children's favourite Sherlock Gnomes will be shown on the big screen and there will be a sausage sizzle to raise funds for the Relay.
And it's not too late to get a team together for this year's event.
The Relay will be held at Baddeley Park on Saturday, October 12 from 10am to 10pm.
