Korreil Wonnai Aboriginal Education Consultative Group recognised the achievements and successes of local students at its seventh annual Kullaburra awards on Wednesday.

Indigenous students from the Cessnock Community of Great Public Schools, Kurri Kurri Learning Community and St. Philip's Christian College Cessnock were recognised at the ceremony, which was held at Cessnock High School.
Kullaburra is the Awabakal and Wonnarua word for "shining", and awards MC Shannon Ping said the recipients were deemed to be shining members of their schools, communities and generation.
More than 140 students were honoured at the awards, with categories for year 12 completion, leadership, sporting, all-rounders and for attendance of 95 percent or above.
Mount View High student Jacinta White, Kurri Kurri High's Anja Atkinson and Cessnock High's Sarah Sales received the Kullaburra Marrung award, a special category recognising high school students who display outstanding dedication to their school, culture and community.
The Wonnarua word for "good, valuable and excellent," the Marrung award includes a trophy and monetary scholarship, sponsored by Korreil Wonnai AECG through its fundraising efforts (including polo shirt sales).
The awards ceremony included performances by Kurri Kurri High School student Kayla Hedges (who sang the national anthem), the Stanford Merthyr Infants School dance group, the Kirawa dance group (featuring students from Cessnock High School and its partner primary schools) and Cessnock High School student Ellen Cowper, who performed the Wukun dance.
AECG president Sonia Sharpe said the awards were highly regarded and enjoyed by the community.
"One high school student wanted to make sure she got her award before she left to go to work - it shows even our high school kids love getting on stage and being recognised," she said.
Mr Ping, the AECG treasurer, said the committee was dedicated to improving students' cultural wellbeing.
"Aboriginal education is everyone's business, and as we've seen here today, we have a bright future," Mr Ping said.
