More than 800 people turned out in wild and windy conditions on Friday night for Cessnock's annual Spring Awakening festival.

The festival once again kicked off with the popular lantern parade from Cessnock Performing Arts Centre to the TAFE grounds, which was adorned with LED light sculptures.
A total fire ban that day led to a modified event, with no fire pits permitted, and the festival was called off around 8pm when rain started to fall.
Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent was delighted to see so many people in our community come together for the event.
"Spring Awakening is a fabulous and vibrant community event and it was great to see more than 800 people enjoying the evening, despite the windy and trying conditions," Cr Pynsent said.
"There is so much hard work that goes into organising an event like this and I would like to thank both the team who made it happen and those who continue to come along and support it."
Spring Awakening is an initiative of Cessnock City Council, designed and developed by Cessnock Performing Arts Centre.
