Cessnock's 2019 Bioblitz has been deemed a fantastic success, with more than 220 people venturing to Poppethead Park in the weekend's windy conditions to explore the local bushland.

BioBlitz is a citizen science event in which scientists and naturalists work with the community to explore their local area with the aim of recording as many species as possible, while learning more about the local flora and fauna.
Some highly-skilled ecologists and botanists were in attendance, as the Cessnock area is so significant for conservation.

The spotlight event on Saturday night, which was a new addition to this year's Bioblitz, was one of the highlights, giving people had the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the species.
This included the Little Bent Wing Bat, that was captured and released during the walk, along with some frogs.
A cultural walk by Mindaribba Aboriginal Land Council was hugely popular on Sunday, giving participants a new way of looking and thinking about local bushland.
Sunday's activities also included bird surveys, nature photography sessions, kids' activities and meet and greets with the local trail bike police.
