The town of Kurri has taken some knocks in recent years, with many businesses having been forced to close down. So when Laura Johnson returned from maternity leave as Hotel Licensee of the Chelmsford Hotel, she knew that a challenge lay ahead.

Two years on and things at the Chelly as it's affectionately known have turned around, so much so in fact that the business has been able to invest in renovations and turn its attention to support local sporting teams and schools by way of sponsorship. Without a doubt one of the triggers for the shift was the launch of Mulletfest, which now in its second year has seen some 160 'mulletiers' turn up to compete is some clean family fun, says Laura Johnson.
"I was worried it might be a one hit wonder but it's been so enthusiastically embraced and attracted so much attention globally, that its really helped to give back to the businesses around town."
With film crew from as far as Croatia keen to document the hairy Aussie tradition and rafts of media that rolled into to town, local businesses have enjoyed some of their busiest days in years during the festival.
For Laura, the joy continues as she sees Kurri firmly back on the map and some three awards nominations at the upcoming Business Excellence Awards. Finalists in Customer Service Whole Business, Hospitality and Tourism and for Laura a spot for Business Woman of the Year, it seems the humble mullet has a very firm future in the Hunter.
