Police allege the man threw items towards the glass door of the Vincent Street building just after 5pm on Saturday, and kicked the door until the glass smashed and he was able to gain access.
The man entered the building, causing minor damage inside the foyer, before leaving.
Officers from Hunter Valley Police District attended, and an investigation commenced.
A 39-year-old man was located in a supermarket carpark around 5.40pm, and was arrested after a short struggle with police.

He was refused bail and will appear in Newcastle Local Court on Monday, October 21.
