In 1987 KFC Cessnock became the first independently franchised KFC restaurant in Australia, and has been owned and operated by a single franchisee, the Kay family since that time.
The Cessnock store has grown significantly over the years having seen many upgrades and expansions.
In 2008, franchisees Julie Kay and Shayne Herring expanded into Kurri Kurri.
"Kurri Kurri has grown at a significant pace, with substantial new residential estates and the Hunter Expressway setting Kurri up as a great place to do business. This is set to continue with further residential land still to be developed," Shayne said.
"Over the last few years the operations of the Cessnock restaurant have outgrown the old site and we are currently in the process of building a brand new store next door to the existing restaurant.
"The new store will provide a fresh décor for customers and a modern streamlined work platform in the kitchen. An extra long drive-thru queue and dual ordering points will make the drive-thru experience much easier."
Shayne says their secret to success is being true to what KFC does well: "selling fresh tasty chicken with Australia's favourite chips and other classic sides like our potato and gravy and fresh coleslaw. We offer our great tasting chicken in a range of great value family meal bundles, as well as a wide range of individual meals and snacks," he said.
Shayne said support from the community has allowed the business to grow and renew, and offer upgraded and better services to their customers.
"As a family business with over 32 years operating in Cessnock and Kurri, we have always appreciated solid support from the local community who have proven to be very loyal," he said.
"In return we support many local sporting clubs and charities and have established senior school scholarships at all three local public high schools. Local businesses are well placed to give back to the community when they are well supported by loyal local customers."
Shayne said their greatest source of pride is the opportunity to give local young people the chance to gain valuable workplace experience.
"Over 32 years we have employed and trained over 1500 young people in Cessnock and Kurri. Some move on after a while, but others stay and progress their careers with KFC," he said.
"The management and staff of KFC Cessnock and Kurri Kurri would like to thank our community for supporting us for 32 years, with many more yet to come."
