But out of sight doesn't mean out of mind - especially to Jade Smith and his clientele at the Abermain Hotel.

They've organised a huge day of music on Sunday, February 23 that will act as a fundraiser to the local firefighters who battled so hard to protect life and property in incredibly trying conditions - the pub's own little way of saying thank you.

"We're not a big pub, we're a small family pub, but you couldn't help but appreciate the efforts of the firies when you would sit down and watch all those images of devastation on television each night," Mr Smith said.

"So while it probably won't be a lot of money, maybe a couple of thousand, it's still better than nothing.

"And we're going to give it to the local brigade - the Neath firefighters - because at least that way we'll know they're getting it and that the local people appreciate what they did."

Mr Smith said that in recent weeks the winners of the weekly schooner draw have been donating their winnings to the firies too, and that he already has $600 put aside for them.

So, on Sunday $1 from every beer or wine sold will go to the firies, along with all proceeds from the events organised on the day which include a $2 sausage sizzle, raffles, a kids jumping castle (gold coin donation) and other children's activities.

"We're really trying to make it a family day, so the kids can be having a great time while the parents are listening to music," Mr Smith said. "That's what our pub is all about.

"And we're just so grateful that our artists agreed to donate their time for this - it was really good of them."

These artists who will be on show are Steve Ashton, Rob Conway, Mick Stuart, Piss To Eme, Imaginary Things, Sandy McNaughton, Molly Millington, Witchlock Blues Lane, The Boatman, Kellie Cain, The XntriX and Aussie Rock Heroes - and Mr Smith hopes more to come.

The music will kick off at 1pm and go into the evening.

"It's going to be an epic day," he said. "I'd encourage people to come along."
