It took Cessnock's Brad York just five minutes to get on the board thanks to a very tidy finish.
Singleton's Joel Barner silenced the vocal Cessnock crowd when he scored the equaliser ahead of the main break.
Cessnock had the better of play in the first half and continued to look strong before their cause was aided further with Singleton's Jackson Skinner receiving a second yellow card and being sent off with 30 minutes to play.
The Hornets took full advantage of their 10-man opposition and York picked up his second part way through the second half.
Zac Kronholm scored a screamer to seal the deal for the boys in black and yellow.
Singleton coach Brendan Slade, who was at the helm at Cessnock in 2018, said said he wasn't sure whether Jackson deserved a second yellow.
"I don't know if it was worth a second yellow but as a result we were down to 10 men.
"Credit to Cessnock though, I thought they played a better game overall,
"We were outplayed, out-muscled and just couldn't keep possession."
Cessnock have the bye this weekend and host Thornton the following Sunday.
