In a perfect world, Melbourne man Dane Roy would be making the 14,500 kilometre flight on Sunday in pursuit of his NFL dream.

But the global coronavirus outbreak has forced the record-breaking University of Houston punter's plans into a holding pattern.

The NCAA Division I college's Pro Day talent showcase - which would have attracted scouts from all 32 NFL franchises next week ahead of the April 23-25 Draft - has been cancelled.

And so Roy's fate lies in the hands of his American agent as the 31-year-old seeks to maintain his form and fitness on the other side of the world while monitoring Government travel and health advice.

The imposing 200cm, 102kg figure trains at his local park in Prahran with volunteers willing to sit under the sky-high right-foot bombs that saw Roy named one of US college football's top three punters last year.

"I think I've got enough on video, stats-wise and size to get me into at least a tryout ... but I definitely want more than that," Roy told AAP this week.

"You might only have three punts and then if you're not too good they'll say sorry and bring in the next guy.

"That's the type of environment it is. It's very cutthroat and if you can't do the job they'll find someone else who can."

To say Roy's trajectory towards the NFL has been unconventional would be an understatement.

The former ice-cream salesman and amateur footballer with Richmond Central launched a 73-metre barrel to win a long-kick competition at the 2015 AFL grand final.

It earned him a scholarship with Pro Kick Australia, an academy set up to help local punters make the grade in America, and he was soon awarded a spot on the UH roster.

It was the life and career launching pad he needed.

Roy saved his best for his senior year, breaking all sorts of UH records.

He set a new Cougar mark for most career punt yards and was a finalist for the 2019 Ray Guy Award, presented annually to college football's most outstanding punter.

The award was won by Kentucky's Max Duffy, who played three AFL games with Fremantle before being delisted in 2015.

"I had a pretty good year," Roy said.

"If you asked me at the start of the year what I thought I would do, none of that would've happened.

"I wanted to be the best punter in my conference ... I had such a good year because I was just enjoying my football."

Now it's a waiting game.

In semi-isolation at home amid the global chaos, Roy, who married partner Chiara Gilligan earlier this month, is on a limited workout schedule with his phone nearby, hoping the agent's call will bear good news.

But the Bunyip native, who raised more than $14,000 to help the people of Gippsland devastated by last summer's bushfires, puts his pro football dream in perspective.

"In the time of uncertainty right now, I'd love everything to go to plan," Roy said.

"But in the grand scheme of things, I just want everyone to be healthy and to get through it (the coronavirus pandemic).

"There's going to be a lot of bad stories that come out of this, so if you can minimise the bad things to happen to you, then you're going to be okay in the end."
