Not only has it left thousands of people out of work, it has also left restaurant owners dealing with the dilemma of what to do with excess stock after the sudden closure or reduction of their business.
The Italian Cottage Restaurant in Cessnock has put its stock to good use by cooking up free meals for disadvantaged people in the community.
The restaurant is still serving takeaway meals six nights a week, and owner Rocky Singh said cooking up the extra meals was a simple way to help people who need it, and allows the restaurant to keep a couple of staff on.
"It's not about money, it's just about helping people in need," Mr Singh said.
"We're doing what we can to survive. We'll never give up."
Mr Singh said the offer has been well-received, with lamb ragu and minestrone soup among the meals that have been distributed.
Some customers have also "paid it forward" by paying for another meal when buying their own.
The Italian Cottage is located at 109 Wollombi Road, Cessnock and is open for takeaways Tuesday to Sunday from 5.30pm. Call 0469 341 926 or 4909 8404 to place your order.
