Not to be deterred, Cessnock City Council's youth services team has created CYCOS Online - a Facebook group that offers a range of opportunities for engagement between young people.
"CYCOS Online grew out of a need for the team to be adaptable, innovative and proactive to the rapidly changing COVID-19 situation, especially due to the postponement of Youth Week," Cessnock City Council's community and cultural engagement manager Natalie Drage said.
"The theme for Youth Week 2020 - Speak Up, Be Involved, Get Connected and Have Fun - is even more important during times of uncertainty.
"CYCOS Online provides a safe and private space for young people to get support, stay connected and engage."
Meme Monday, How-To Tuesday (tutorials), Wind Down Wednesday (a Zoom group chat) and Test Your Skills Thursday (trivia and games) are offered through CYCOS Online.
Then on FYI Friday, during which members and youth workers will share some information that they have found interesting during the week. This includes services available, mental health supports, meditation guides, podcasts, movies, books and much more.
"Common emotions that young people feel during this time can be anxiety, worry and fear, however, one of the biggest challenges is feeling isolated," Ms Drage said.
"The CYCOS team aim to bridge that gap using CYCOS Online.
"A key objective is that all local young people can connect using the online services and can be linked in to other services where necessary."
