Mary Vassallo rescued the wedding photo from a Sydney tip in 1983.
"I was on my motorcycle travelling behind a car towing a trailer along Moorebank Avenue when I spotted the frame the picture was in," she said.
"I followed the car to the rubbish tip. As the car was waiting in the queue, I pulled up alongside and asked the driver if I could take the picture. So I took it from the trailer and took it back to my Army accommodation."
Marked 'Galloway Cessnock', the photo was most likely taken by renowned local photographer Alexander Galloway, who had studios at Cessnock, Weston, Kurri Kurri and Maitland in the early 1900s.
Returning to Perth a few months later, Mary cleaned up the frame and replaced the picture with her parents' wedding day photo.
She kept the old photo, hoping to one day trace the families of the people pictured and return it to them, but has had no such luck.
