After a great win in the opening round against Maitland a fortnight earlier, the Cessnock District John Bull Shield representative team were beaten by five wickets by new-comers Suburban District at East End on Sunday.

Batting first Cessnock made a modest 202, but paid the price for being bowled out inside 40 overs. Matt Hopley (52) continued his recent good form, with Fletcher Sharpe (36), Jason Orr (32), skipper Joey Butler (26), Drew Olsen (17) and Brett Watson (14no) all contributing.
Suburban Districts remained in control throughout the run chase, achieving the target in the 45th.
Cameron Ross was the pick of the Cessnock attack with 3-27 off 10, with Watson (1-48 off 6) and Hopley (1-38 off 10) completing good all-round games.
Cessnock have a bye before taking on Upper Hunter at Scone on December 13.
