Developed through a partnership between Greater Bank and the University of Newcastle, the Finance Academy delivers a range of community education programs and practical workshops that aim to improve financial literacy knowledge across the community.
The four-week program is being delivered at the Weston outreach centre by Youth Off The Streets staff together with Greater Bank and University of Newcastle ambassadors who will discuss the practical and theoretical strategies behind money management.
The financial literacy program covers topics such as managing money, reducing debt and implementing simple saving strategies as a way of teaching students how to make informed financial decisions.
Youth Off The Streets' director of services, Ranna Peera, said the program gives students the financial knowledge they need to navigate systems and services available to them.
"Our partnership with Greater Charitable Foundation has enabled us to expand our support to young people in the Hunter Valley, not only with the Financial Literacy program, but also our Hunter Suspension Program, which works with young people that need additional support to succeed within mainstream schooling," she said.
"Both programs enable us to deliver support that assists young people achieve their goals and reach independence."
Greater Charitable Foundation CEO, Anne Long, said she was delighted to broaden its support of Youth Off The Streets through the Greater Bank-sponsored program.
"Greater Charitable Foundation has had a strong association with Youth of the Streets for six years, which we've now been able to strengthen through Greater Bank's financial literacy program," she said.
"We understand the importance of financial literacy within the community which is why we've reached out to one of our key partners to help build this capacity among the youths that they already support.
"We're delighted to work with students from Youth Off The Streets' Hunter Valley Engagement and Support program on such an important initiative that encourages them to question how they think about money while also achieving their financial goals."
Greater Charitable Foundation has provided more than $425,000 to support Youth Off The Streets in the Hunter Valley since 2014.
