The briefings will be held at the Cessnock City Council chambers on Thursday, June 24, with sessions at 2pm and 6pm.
Council's general manager Lotta Jackson encourages anyone who is interested in standing for council to come along.
The briefing will cover useful information about what is involved in being a local councillor, what is expected during a term on council, and the election.
"Those who are new to local government will benefit from attending and be better informed about their decision to stand," Ms Jackson said.
"For example, council currently holds its ordinary council meetings on the third Wednesday evening of the month, except in January.
"Councillors also attend briefings prior to the council meeting to discuss agenda items.
"Workshops related to matters before council or as a result of a council resolution are usually held on Wednesdays and committee meetings are held on various days.
"Councillor training and professional development opportunities are available to assist councillors in their role.
"We're looking forward to meeting the candidates and hope to see a diverse range of people interested in representing their community.
"Local councillors often find it an extremely rewarding experience as you have the opportunity to play a role in the future of your local community."
The briefings will run for two hours. For more information or to RSVP, contact council's Governance Team on 4993 4100 or email governance@cessnock.nsw.gov.au.
The local government election will be held on September 4, 2021 - having been postponed for 12 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
