Cessnock City Council has identified the land in Swanson Street for potential rezoning to allow for residential development, the sale of which would fund the adopted masterplan for Weston Bears Park, where it is proposed the junior club would relocate.

But the junior club's membership has grown by about 60 percent over the past 18 months, attributed to the addition of Miniroos summer programs, Kick On For Women, and all-age women's and men's teams.

It currently uses two fields at Varty Park, and the Bears masterplan only includes one field for the junior club.

"We're certainly not against the masterplan development (at Bear Park), but there's not enough space," club president Samantha Tama said.

"A move to the Weston Bears ground would reduce the capacity for these inclusive programs and disadvantage the local community."

Ms Tama said previous committees were hesitant to invest in the club and its infrastructure due to the proposal to move to the Bears ground, but the current committee is committed to providing sporting programs all year round.

And, with its recent accreditation as a 5 Star Club under the National Development Program, it seeks to grow the club by a further 50 to 60 percent in the next two years.

The committee has also taken measures to address vandalism and anti-social behaviour at Varty Park, by engaging with local motorbike riders and installing CCTV.

Varty Park is one of seven parcels of council-owned land that were being considered for reclassification and rezoning under a draft planning proposal by Cessnock City Council that was released in April.

It proposed to reclassify 85 Swanson Street from community to operational land, and rezone the land from public recreation to medium density residential, which would allow for the development of approximately 117 residential lots.

Two other sites identified in the draft proposal - Jacob's Park at Pelaw Main, and Victoria Park at Greta - have since been excluded.

Labor councillors Jay Suvaal and Anne Sander have lodged a motion for this Wednesday's council meeting requesting that Varty Park also be excluded from the proposal.

Cr Suvaal said he was confident council would support the notice of motion, as it did for Jacob's Park in May and Victoria Park in June.

"When it is clear that both the junior and senior clubs won't fit on the proposed new site, council needs to listen," Cr Suvaal said.

Cr Sander, a lifelong Weston resident, said the notice of motion will ensure Varty Park is retained for future outdoor recreation use.

"It's great to see more kids out playing sport and we need to make sure council has the grounds and facilities available for them," she said.
