The Australia Day awards recognise people who make a difference in our community.
Nominations can be for an outstanding achievement during the past year and/or a significant contribution to the local community over a number of years.
A new award has been announced for 2022: the Environment Award - Young Citizen. This award will provide the opportunity to recognise local young people who are championing environmental initiatives in the Cessnock community.
Categories include:
- Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year
- Senior Citizen of the Year
- Maree Callaghan Award - Young Female Achiever
- Community Event of the Year
- Sports Award
- Environment Award
- Environment Award - Young Citizen
- Heritage Award
- Community Award
Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said the Australia Day awards are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate those who dedicate themselves to making our community a better place.
"We have had some magnificent people over the years take to the stage to accept their awards and many of these locals continue to great things in our community," he said.
"If you know of an exceptional individual or organisation doing great things in our community, I encourage you to nominate them today."
Nominations must be submitted by 11.30pm Sunday, October 24.
The winners will be announced at a civic reception on Australia Day.
