The road upgrade on Mitchell Avenue, Kurri Kurri - between Government Road and Northcote Street - kicked off last week and are expected to take about 12 weeks to complete, weather permitting.
The works will include drainage improvements, a new section of kerb and gutter, road pavement resurfacing, signs and line marking, and guardrail repairs and extension.
IN THE NEWS:
Cessnock City Council received $1,177,500 in joint state-federal funding towards the project in July 2020 under the NSW Fixing Local Roads program, which provided grants for shovel-ready projects that could be delivered within two years of receiving the funding.
Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said it's always great to see road upgrade works happening across the local government area, no matter how big or small the job.
"Our dedicated crews do a great job and I'm sure residents of Kurri Kurri will be pleased to see these works taking place," Cr Pynsent said.
Traffic control measures will be in place for the duration of the works and will include a combination of traffic controllers and temporary traffic lights.
Meanwhile, work is progressing on the upgrade of Cessnock Road, Abermain, where traffic lights will be installed at the intersection with Orange Street.
Two new pedestrian crossings have been created - one near Jeffries Park and one near the Swamp Creek bridge - with the former crossing near the fire station removed.
The Abermain road works will be carried out from 6.30pm to 4.30am from Sundays to Thursdays. The project is expected to be completed by April 2022, weather permitting.
Road works are also under way on Cessnock Road at Gillieston Heights, to widen and resurface a section of the road between Gillieston Road and Fishery Creek Bridge.
Those works will will be carried out from 6.30pm to 4.30am Sunday to Thursday and are also expected to be completed by April next year, weather permitting.
