About 90 people attended the luncheon at Cessnock Leagues Club, including deputy mayor John Moores, representatives of the Mining and Energy Union, Coal Services Australia and retired mineworkers branches from across the state.
The first of its kind, the Cessnock branch formed in 1942, at a time when when mineworkers were obliged to retire at 60.
Branch secretary Brett Parkes said the Retired Mineworkers Association continues to play an important role in the community.
"There are no mines left here, with the closure of Austar, but we've still got coal in our veins," he said.
Mr Parkes thanked everyone who helped to organise the luncheon for making it a successful event.
The branch meets on the second Monday of every second month (starting February) and new members are always welcome. Contact Brett on 4990 7676 for inquiries.
