Cessnock Library will host to the exhibition, titled Scandalous, which opens this Wednesday as part of the 2022 Australian Heritage Festival.
The Australian Heritage Festival is the country's largest community-driven heritage event and the theme for 2022 is Curiosity.
Library services coordinator Rose-marie Walters said locals are invited to come along and discover some of Cessnock's scandalous stories in this fascinating new exhibition.
"We are all fascinated by crime, scandal and corruption, and even more so when it's in our own backyard," Ms Walters said.
Tales of a gun-toting councillor, a controversial South African preacher, and a notorious Sydney crime figure's 'tree change' to Kurri Kurri are among the stories uncovered in the exhibition.
Scandalous will run at Cessnock Library from April 27 to May 31.
