Mr Gelder was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in December 2023 and died of complications on May 6, his husband actor Ben Daniels confirmed.
"I'd stopped all work to be his carer but neither of us had any idea that it would all be so fast," Mr Daniels said. The couple met in 1993 and have been together for 30 years.
Mr Daniels described his husband as "the kindest, most generous spirited and loving human being" as well as a "wonderful, wonderful actor".
He said Mr Gelder was his "absolute rock".
"If we weren't together we spoke to each other every day," The Crown actor said.
Aside from roles in major modern series, Mr Gelder also featured in classic British shows including Absolutely Fabulous, Rumpole of the Bailey and Poirot.
He also guest-starred as Zellin in the 12th season of Doctor Who alongside Jodie Whittaker and in the BBC adaptation of Philip Pullman's critically acclaimed trilogy His Dark Materials.
"I honestly don't know what I'll do without him by my side," Mr Daniels said.
"He was remarkable and will be so missed."
