Connor Minchinton, Daniel Lambkin and Liam Whiteley have joined forces with four students from Launceston College in Tasmania to compete as an internal collaboration team known as Envisity.
The Mount View trio were members of Revolution Racing, who placed fourth at the national F1 In Schools challenge in Adelaide in March, while the Launceston team (Instant Transmission) placed third.
The F1 In Schools challenge involves teams designing and manufacturing a miniature Formula One car to race down a 20-metre track, while being judged on their specifications, engineering, portfolio, marketing and verbal presentation.
It’s the world's largest secondary school science, technology, education and maths (STEM) program, with more than 20 million students taking part each year.
But only about 500 students will have the chance to compete for the Bernie Ecclestone World Championship trophy at the world finals in Kuala Lumpur from September 24 to 27.
The Mount View and Launceston teams had struck up a friendship over the years and were thrilled to earn the wildcard entry for the world championships.
“It’s a massive achievement, and a big challenge,” team manager Liam said.
Despite the 1500-kilometre distance between the team members, the boys are hoping their combination will prove to be a formidable one.
The team has received support from Youth Express to link with local industry contacts.
“Industry collaboration is a huge part of it, and if we can do our stuff to industry standards, it’s what the judges like to see,” manufacturing engineer Daniel said.
Youth Express industry liaison officer Tania Bunk said she is impressed with the boys’ dedication, professionalism and perseverance.
Envisity will depart for Malaysia on September 20 and is still seeking sponsorship from local businesses.
They are also selling raffle tickets at the school.
