The 21-year-old twins will show cattle in the paraders’ competition for the sixth year running, and for the first time, will have entries in the steer section.
The family loaded up their trucks and travelled to Sydney on Monday for the show, which gets underway this Friday.
Showing cattle is a family effort – as the twins both work full-time (Dylan as an apprentice butcher and Jake as a diesel mechanic), they get lots of support from their dad Geoff, mum Linda and brother Joel.
Preparation for the paraders’ competition includes grooming, feeding, and teaching the cattle to walk and stand for presentation.
The steers are judged on criteria such as weight, fat scan and eye muscle area, and (after they are taken to the abattoir) their carcass, yield, pH level, colour and tenderness.
Linda said it will be a busy show for the family, taking 10 head of cattle along, but they are looking forward to it, as always.
“Even though it's hard work, this is our once-a-year holiday,” she said.
“It will be great to catch up with all our friends from all over Australia, who we only see once a year.
“They’re like another family.
“Just to be there and compete is great – a ribbon would be a bonus.”
Growing up on the family farm at Quorrobolong, Dylan and Jake were inspired to enter the Easter show while studying agriculture at Mount View High School.
They first entered the Royal Easter Show in 2013, and won the junior champion female ribbon for the Santa Gertrudis breed for Barraba Destiny (shown by Jake).
The boys followed in the footsteps of their grandparents Alfie and Jeanette Smith, who showed cattle for 35 years.
Alfie left the cattle stud to the twins when he died in 2015, and they have continued to do their grandfather proud.
They will present the Alf Smith Memorial Trophy to the junior champion Santa Gertrudis bull at the Easter show.
Their success this year includes winning the senior champion bull, senior champion cow and junior champion bull for the Santa Gertrudis breed at Maitland Show; and senior champion Santa Gertudis bull, senior champion Santa Gertudis cow, reserve champion cow and champion interbreed bull at the Newcastle Show.
The 2018 Sydney Royal Easter Show runs from March 23 to April 3.
