Councillors unanimously supported a Mayoral Minute at last Wednesday's council meeting, in which mayor Bob Pynsent called for a special event to be organised to acknowledge their efforts, and show gratitude and support.
"Our region experienced a highly active 2019/20 fire season, particularly in the areas of North Rothbury, Greta, Pelaw Main, Laguna, Wollombi and Bucketty, which had a significant impact on the community," Cr Pynsent said.
"The 14 RFS Brigades across the Cessnock LGA worked tirelessly to protect our community during this time.
"These volunteers put their own lives at risk to help others and receive very little in return for doing so.
"Their swift action meant fires were downgraded quickly and homes were saved.
"I saw their tremendous community spirit shine though first hand and I know how appreciative affected community members are of their service.
"This event is an opportunity for council to officially recognise the outstanding contribution in what were horrendous weather conditions."
The event will be funded by phase one of the joint NSW and Commonwealth Government Bushfire Community Resilience and Economic Recovery Funds.
It will be held before June 30, with a date to be announced soon.
